Wilmington Pride’s
objective
WILMINGTON PRIDE EVENTS
Wilmington Pride would like to coordinate annual Pride Events that take place for one week during the year. For this year we plan to have Events for Pride Sunday June 5th to Sunday June 12th in which each evening has an event and on Saturday and Sunday there are events that take place in the day and at night.
OTHER FUNDRAISERS
Wilmington Pride would like to continue our efforts in fundraising. At our last fundraiser space was donated by Ibiza and performers donated their services. We held a Drag King pop-up performance. We generated $435.00 from that event. On May 21st we plan to hold another fundraiser at Ibiza called a Burlesque Show. We estimate that we will raise about $350.00. The other fundraiser that we are working on is Wilmington Pride 2011. At Pride we would like to generate income from programs.
Awareness
For Wilmington Pride, sometimes it’s not about the money. Also this organization would like to continue to have a celebration for National Coming Out Day. This is a free event for the community and is put together for very little cost. Last year a The National Coming Out Day Pride Rally generated over 350 people downtown to hear music and hear speakers from various groups talk about how they service the community.
This year we also would like put together a Christmas Party again for ACES to generate gifts for children who were effected or affected by HIV/AIDS. Several members from the community attended this event. People were asked to bring a dish and an unwrapped present. We provided about 200 gifts to ACES. We would like to have this event be annual.
ACES, Inc
805-F North 4th Street
Wilmington, NC 28401
(910) 763-4800
Description of ACES Services:
Provides the following services for individuals with a documented HIV status or a diagnosis of AIDs: HIV Case Management; Transportation; Primary Medical Care; Substance abuse treatment; oral healthcare; medications assistance; Nutritional supplements; Emergency financial assistance; All services offered in-house or through collaboration and referrals with partner agencies
Also this year Wilmington Pride partnered with the Health Department and put together a Sweetheart’s Ball at Ibiza. At the Sweethearts Ball people who received a free HIV/AIDS test were entered into a drawing for the Spring Break Ibiza Party and had access to free food and non-alcoholic drinks. About 40 people were tested.
We would like to coordinate with UNCW Pride to have our first ever HIV/AIDS Walk in October in honor of Coming Out Day with ACES and the Health Department. Also on December 2nd or 3rd December 2011 Wilmington Pride would like to work together with ACES and the Health Department in conjunction with Ibiza to put together a White Party. Most, if not all of the proceeds of these two events will go towards AIDS/HIV Research.
Community Affairs
Wilmington Pride would like to pass a resolution calling for creation of a city registry for people in same-sex relationships and endorsing a non-discrimination policy based on sexual orientation and gender identity, as well as supporting an ordinance against bullying on city property like was recently done in Asheville, NC.
Wilmington Pride would also like to work with Stonewall Democrats to persuade the mayor and other city councils to have the week of Pride “June 5th – June 12th” be proclaimed publicly.
Membership
Wilmington Pride would like to get as many members of the community involved as a member of the Wilmington Pride Community. During Pride any person that purchases a Pride Pass will receive a membership card. Throughout the year we will have special events in which members will get a discount or a free gift. Wilmington Pride would like to have an inexpensive membership level that requires a certain points for attending events or volunteering hours of service at Wilmington Pride fundraisers or Wilmington Pride Sponsored events. Also after Wilmington Pride 2011, new memberships could receive a Wilmington Pride T-shirts while supplies last.
Programs
Wilmington Pride Youth Group:
To continue to have monthly meetings that target high school student as well as young adults. There are 4 representatives from the Wilmington Pride community including 3 current board members. Wilmington Pride Board members Eryn Roberts, Lynn Casper and TR Nunley facilitate the group as well as community member Julie Leslie. We currently meet at BuenaSpace which is located at 27 North Front every 3rd Friday of the month. There are three objectives of the Wilmington Pride Youth Group. 1. Bringing students together to discuss topics that they choose. Examples are of topics include bullying in school and how to deal with it, culture trends, gender roles, and community events. 2. Assisting students with setting up GSA programs in their school for students that are already openly members of the GLBTQIA community. (Currently there are no GSA programs in New Hanover or Brunswick County. There is one GSA program in Pender County. ) 3. Bringing students together to social events to bond the students including “Gaymes and Mooovie Night and Youth Bowling.
Format of the meetings: Community members, Board Members and Students state their names and a little about themselves. One of the facilitators brings up a current topic and its discussed to break the ice then the group writes on pieces of paper topics, questions, comments and then the group answers them.
Wilmington Pride Youth Group members are cultivated through emails to schools, facebook, off the Out-Wilmington website, as well as posters that are dispends in the community.
In the future: Board members Sam Deprisco, Eryn Robets, Lynn Casper and TR Nunley will devise a proposal to New Hanover, Pender and Brunswick Counties have a presence in school. We would like to be provide the Resource Pride Guide to Counselors, Teachers and Social Workers, that has information about Wilmington Pride as well as times and dates of the PFlag Meeting and Wilmington Pride Youth Group. Currently we have submitted the Resource Pride Guide to all the Counselors and Principals in the New Hanover, Brunswick and Pender Counties. Some counselors have contacted us to find out more information, some say thank you and some tell us that their hands are tied because we need approval from the school board to contact them, hence the proposal. The members of PFlag as well as teachers Sarah Aimone and Melinda Ervin have also volunteered to help with this. We would also like to propose a free workshop for teachers about GLBTQIA issues so that they can be more educated on GLBTQIA topics as well a free anti-bullying program for high school students.
HOME Support Group
To continue to have monthly meetings that target parents, students and community members called the HOME Group. HOME stands for Hear, Observe, Mingle and Engage. This is not just a support group, but will provide opportunities to “give-back” with service projects as a way to bond group members and give back to Wilmington community that may or may not be GLBTQIA organizations. Board Member TR Nunley facilities this group as well as UNCW outreach coordinator Kris Rollins. Monthly meetings are held at the NorthEast Library at 3:00-4:30 in the Oak Room on the Last Saturday of the month.
PFLAG
To continue to be a presence at the PFLAG meetings and advertise this meeting to the community through facebook. Since our involvement with PFLAG, membership of that group has doubled. We also refer the parents of the Wilmington Pride Youth Group members to this meeting.
As we continue to be a presence in the community we would like to create support groups for GLBTQIA including a group for Military Personnel and family members, a bereavement program, and a support group for people suffering from HIV/AIDS.
EDUCATION
Wilmington Pride believes that educating ourselves is the key to success. Wilmington Pride members have take advantage of the Small Business Center classes that are offered at CFCC for free or little cost. As of date Wilmington Pride members went to a class called “How to develop a success Board of Directors” and “How To Start A Non-Profit”.
The Wilmington Pride Board and perhaps other members who intend to participate in decision making will be encouraged to take the following courses at CFCC.

GRANTS
If Out-Wilmington allows Wilmington Pride to take over, we intend to do a great deal of grant writing immediately. Executive Board members as well as a few at-large board members will take a grant writing course. As mentioned above the CFCC offers a Grant writing course for non-profit organizations. We would like to Grant write for a small space to have meetings.
When we are more stable our ultimate goal is to grant write for a large enough space to have a one-stop center like the William Way Center in Philadelphia, PA. http://www.waygay.org/ We would like a space big enough to offer
